Prime Minister delivers statement of assets to the Anti-Corruption Commission

The Prime Minister, Rui Maria de Araújo, has delivered, as a symbolic act, his statement of assets to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), on the occasion of the celebration of the fifth anniversary of this institution, celebrated on February 20th, at the Noble Hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, in Dili.

This act by the Head of Government aims to promote an open and transparent governance.

Rui Maria de Araújo spoke about the impact of corruption in society and in the development of the country, by highlighting how much it affects the quality of life of the most deprived people. He also mentioned the effect of these unlawful practices in economic development, which discourages business investment in the country. According to the Prime Minister, corruption is therefore an intolerable act, which should be penalized when there is strong evidence.5_Aniv_CAC

Also in his speech, Rui Maria de Araújo stressed that the Timorese people, who sacrificed so much during the struggle for liberation, should not to see their country steeped in corruption. Therefore, said there is not the slightest reason to accept such practices or to let them take root in society. Also pointed out that Timor-Leste needs to have a stronger Anti-Corruption Commission in institutional terms, following principles of rigor and firmness in combating corrupt practices and requiring the government responsibility and honesty in the performance of their duties.

The Prime Minister emphasized, too, that the VI Constitutional Government is committed to give full support to the ACC in carrying out its functions, providing it with the legal provisions which will further these purposes.

He took the opportunity to congratulate the former Commissioner of the ACC, Adérito de Jesus Soares, for his unceasing efforts in creating this institution, which has provided an important service to the country. He also thanked the new Commissioner, Adérito Tilman, for having accepted this position and, symbolically presented his declaration of assets to the Anti-Corruption Commission.

The celebration of the 5th anniversary of the ACC, was attended by the former holders of sovereign bodies, members of the Government and the diplomatic corps, as well as elements of the civil society of Timor-Leste.
