Prime Minister sends President formal letter of resignation from his post as Prime Minister of Timor-Leste

 

The Government confirms that the Prime Minister of Timor-Leste, H.E. Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, has sent his letter of resignation from the post of Prime Minister to the President of the Republic, H.E. Taur Matan Ruak.

It is now for the President of the Republic to consider and respond to the letter of resignation.

According to Law 07/2007 the Prime Minister will end his functions with the swearing in of a new Prime Minister by the President of the Republic.

Recently the Prime Minister encouraged all members of Government to work calmly in this time of transition until the new Government is sworn in. The President will follow the procedures laid out in the Constitution consulting with all political parties in the National Parliament, and the Council of State.

The Spokesperson for the Fifth Constitutional Government, Minister of State Agio Pereira, noted that “members of government, staying, leaving and incoming are all working together, prioritizing the national interest of Timor-Leste and committed to respecting the dignity and legacy of “Maun-Bo’ot Xanana” as he transitions from his position after leading the Struggle for National Liberation until the end, completing the full mandate of five years as elected President of the Republic and seven and a half years as Prime Minister.
