Prime Minister visits Malaysia, Australia and China

From 30 Mar until 15 Apr

The Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão will have an Official Visit to Malaysia from 30 March to 2 April. Between 3 and 5 April Xanana Gusmão will conduct a Working Visit to Perth, Australia. From 6 to 14 April, the Head of the Timorese Government will conduct an Official Visit to the People’s Republic of China.


Malaysia (30 March to 2 April)

On his Official Visit to Malaysia, the Head of State will meet with the Prime Minister of Malaysia, His Excellency Najib Razak. The Official Visit will further strengthen the bonds of friendship between Malaysia and Timor-Leste as regional partners in Southeast Asia. Discussions will focus on expanding the bilateral relationship in the area of education, multilateral issues of mutual concern and potential investment in Timor-Leste. Visits to Malaysia’s state-owned oil and gas company, Petronas, are planned as Malaysia has experience and expertise in this area.
On his last day the Prime Minister will accept an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Malaysia Sabah (UMS) where he will give an address titled: “ASEAN: Perspectives and Challenges” and discuss areas of mutual cooperation between that institution and the National University of Timor Lorosa’e (UNTL).


Australia (3 to 5 April)

The Prime Minister will then visit Perth on a Working Visit, which will include attending a Special Air Service Regiment (SAS) fundraising dinner as a special guest. In Perth he will also meet with Australia’s Foreign Minister, Julie Bishop, and the Governor-General, Peter Cosgrove, in addition to members of Western Australia’s business community. Xanana Gusmão will visit the BCG cement factory, which will construct a cement plant in Baucau, with an annual output capacity of 1.5 million tons.


People’s Republic of China (6 to 14 April)

This will be the first Official Visit of Xanana Gusmão to the People’s Republic of China, a major development and investment partner of Timor-Leste. The Prime Minister has the honor of meeting with the top leadership of the country: President, Xi Jingping, the Premier, Li Keqiang, and the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, Zhang Dejiang.
The Prime Minister will be the Keynote Speaker at the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2014 in Sanya, Hainan Province. Heads of Government from Laos, Kazakhstan, Pakistan and Iran will hold a panel discussion together on the reinvigoration of the ‘Maritime Silk Road’ for a future of peace and prosperity in Asia.

Visits are scheduled to major agricultural sites and Free Economic Zones across four Provinces. The Prime Minister’s delegation will include Ministers whose portfolios are relevant to Timor-Leste’s close partnership with China: Minister of State and Foreign Affair and Cooperation; Minister of State Administration; Minister of Transports and Communication; Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries; Minister of Tourism; Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resource and Secretary of State for Defense. Also on the official delegation will be part Mari Alkatiri, Former Prime Minister and Representative of State for the Special Economic and Social Market Zone.
