Timor-Leste and Trinidad and Tobago establish diplomatic relations
The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste established diplomatic relations with the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago at a ceremony at the Permanent Mission of Trinidad and Tobago to the United Nations in New York on September 24, 2013.
The Minister of State and for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Timor-Leste, Mr. José Luís Guterres, and his Trinidad and Tobago’s counterpart Mr. Winston Dookeran, signed an Agreement that expresses the desire of both Governments to establish diplomatic relations and develop ties of friendship and cooperation regarding political, cultural, economic, humanitarian areas among others.
Timor-Leste and Trinidad and Tobago reaffirmed their commitment to the principles and purposes of the United Nations and international law, including the sovereign equality of States, territorial integrity and non-interference in the internal affairs of another State.
The establishment of diplomatic relations between the two States was formalized in conformity with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of April 18, 1961.
In concluding the ceremony, José Luís Guterres e Winston Dookeran assured that the establishment of diplomatic relations corresponded to the interests of both States and would further strengthen international peace and security.
