Prime Minister appoints Professor Sukehiro Hasegawa as his Special Adviser
The Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, H.E. Mr. Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, has appointed Professor Sukehiro Hasegawa, former Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General as his Special Adviser on Good Governance and Development.
The Prime Minister said “Our people are working, in accordance with our nation’s Strategic Development Plan 2011-2030, to develop our nation and improve the lives of our people. While the Government is focused on implementation during this mandate, it is necessary to have a system of good governance to effectively deliver on our priorities.”
“The Public Sector Management and Good Governance section of the Strategic Development Plan sets out a range of good governance reforms which will strengthen our system of Government. With Mr Hasegawa’s extensive international experience on good governance and development he will be well placed to provide specialised advice on options to progress implementation of these reforms” the Prime Minister said.
"In addition to his experience and knowledge, Professor Hasegawa is committed to the well-being of the people of Timor-Leste. Now retired from the UN he has accepted the appointment as my Special Advisor" the Prime Minister said.
Professor Sukehiro Hasegawa had 37 years of career service with the United Nations before his retirement at the end of September, 2006. He served as the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Timor-Leste from 21 May 2004 to 30 September 2006 and concurrently as served as Head of the United Nations Mission of Support in East Timor (UNMISET) from May 2004 to May 2005, the United Nations Office in Timor-Leste (UNOTIL) from May 2005 to August 2006, the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT) from 25 August to 30 September 2006). From July 2002 to July 2006, he was also the United Nations Resident Coordinator for Timor-Leste and the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme.
