Prime Minister met with the President of the Republic of South Sudan

For the first time, the Prime Minister and his delegation met with the President of South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, on October 17, a visit which aims to consolidate bilateral relations and establish commitments to strengthen cooperation in the future, since these countries share the same experience in the struggle for independence.

South Sudan wants its leaders to be aware of the method used by the Timorese in the management of their oil fund. The Timor-Leste Head of Government explained that Timor-Leste resorted to a system where a part of the natural resources is used for the development of the country, particularly in basic infrastructure, reserving the rest for future generations.

Xanana Gusmão proposed that the State of South Sudan send their technicians to work with the National Petroleum Authority to be better informed about how Timor-Leste manages its oil resources in the petroleum area.

Depois da reunião do Primeiro-Ministro e da Ministra das Finanças de Timor-Leste com a Ministra das Finanças do Sudão do Sul, os líderes timorenses reuniram-se com os doadores na sede do Banco Mundial, em Juba. Este encontro pretende que o Governo partilhe a sua experiência no que respeita ao trabalho com os doadores de Timor-Leste.

After the meeting of the Timor-Leste's Prime Minister and Minister of Finance with the Minister of Finance of South Sudan, the Timorese leaders met with donors in the World Bank headquarters in Juba. This meeting intends for the Government to share its experience with regards to work with Timor-Leste donors.

In his speech, Xanana Gusmão highlighted the experiences of the Timorese Government with donors, asking them to have a plan with a plan, in lieu with the national development plan, which is intended to develop the nation that is now being build.

On another occasion, the Prime Minister and his delegation met with the President of South Sudan Parliament, James Wani Igga. At this meeting, James Wani Igga talked about the experience of his country, and the difficulties they face, and which still have no solution even after independence, regarding refugees, border demarcation, economic development and other sectors. The President of Parliament requested to Timor-Leste, a “fraternal” country in the struggle for independence, for support in these areas.

The Prime Minister, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, used this occasion to deliver an edition of the Strategic Development Plan of Timor-Leste.
