Timor-Leste and Indonesia at a meeting for border demarcation
Timor-Leste and Indonesia organized the 38th meeting of the Technical Subcommittee on Border Demarcation and Regulation, at the Diplomatic Institute, from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, in Díli. The meeting was held on August 10th and 11th, 2015.
National Director for Southeast Asia, Marcos da Costa, Head of the Timor-Leste delegation, explained that, on this meeting, both nations would establish the time-frame for the assessment at the demarcation land and installation of landmarks and border bulletin boards on the previously agreed areas between both countries.
According to the plan, Timor-Leste and Indonesia will place on the border 80 landmarks a year. Since 2005, they have been placed almost 500. Both countries shall settle during this year an extra 200 landmarks. From these, Timor-Leste has committed itself to place 120 and Indonesia 80.
“If this year we managed to accomplish the plan, it will mean that the main border delimitation will be concluded. In the future, we only have to solve the delimitation of Oecusse”, declared Marcos da Costa.
On this meeting, the map production that will ease field work, namely to border security services, was discussed. The conception process of a single map was initiated in 2013 and will finish in 2016.
The delegation from Indonesia was comprised by representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defence, the Information Agency (Geospatial) that takes care of map production in that country, and the Embassy in Díli.
The delegation from Timor-Leste was led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Hernani Coelho, accompanied by representatives from Customs (Ministry of Finance), Quarantine, Border and Immigration Police Unit, and from the Presidency of the Republic.
