Prime Minister meets with Ambassador of the Republic of Korea
The Prime Minister, Dr. Rui Maria de Araújo, met the South Korean Ambassador, Kim Ki-Nam, on March 26th, 2015, at the Government Palace, in Díli.
At the meeting, issues were discussed related to the change for Sixth Constitutional Government, as well as bilateral relationships.
The Head of the Timorese Government thanked for the support provided by Korea to Timor-Leste, since the beginning of independence, especially in the areas of human resources development, health, public works and education.
Rui Maria de Araújo recalled that this support included sending about 1400 Timorese workers – who had the opportunity to go to Korea to acquire new knowledge on several sectors – as well has Timorese scholarship holders who went to finish their studies in that country.
The Ambassador Kim Ki-nam highlighted that Korea, an Asian country quite developed on several activity sectors, will provide continuity to bilateral cooperation with Timor-Leste, namely on education and health sectors.
He also recalled that, amongst the supports provided by his Government, through the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), is the offer of a large scale printer to the Ministry of Education, as well as the support to six secondary technical schools and training in the area of security to the Maritime Police Unit (MPU), from the National Police of Timor-Leste. The Korean Ambassador also informed that his government will support the construction of a National Fisheries Centre as planned.
The Head of the Timorese Government referred the possibility for cooperation between both countries in maintenance and repair of ships in Timor-Leste. Korea is known by its higher technical standards on this area. Timor-Leste is, currently, providing maintenance to its ships abroad and could, therefore, start doing in inside the national territory, with large benefits for the future of the country.
