Timor-Leste and Indonesia held the second consultation meeting on maritime borders
Timor-Leste and Indonesia held the second consultation meeting on maritime borders, in Surabaia, Indonesia, on October 29th and 30th, 2015. The objective was to discuss the terms of reference (TOR) and the work plan of the delimitation process of the permanent maritime border between Timor-Leste and Indonesia.
This meeting follows the previously held on September 18th, 2015, in the building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MFAC), in Dili.
"On this occasion, the two parties agreed that the terms of reference and the work plan could be the basis for starting the process of negotiations on the demarcation of the permanent maritime border," recalled MFAC’s Secretary-General, Francisco Cepeda.
The process of demarcation of maritime borders between Timor-Leste and Indonesia will be based on international law, in particular in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
These meetings of consultation result from the concrete actions of the two parties to follow up on the statements by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, and the Prime Minister of Timor-Leste, Rui Maria de Araújo, during the official visit to Jakarta, Indonesia, August 26th, 2015.
The delegation from Timor-Leste was led by Francisco Cepeda, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Timor-Leste, and enjoyed the collaboration of members of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Presidency of the Republic and of the Maritime Boundary Office.
