Launching and opening of the National Basketball League in Timor-LesteAfter football and volleyball, the Prime Minister, Rui Maria de Araújo, launched the first Basketball League in Timor-Leste, which took place at the GMT Gymnasium in Díli (Gedung Matahari Terbit - in Indonesian).
During the opening, the Head of Government encouraged other modalities to follow the example of the three modalities mentioned above, in order to boost the sport activity in the country.
For Rui Maria de Araújo, Timor-Leste has great potential in the sports arena, yet citizens need to organize themselves.
Eleven teams (women and men) were officially registered and will compete in the first National Basketball League of Timor-Leste. The opening match was on February 25 and is due to finish in November this year.
This ceremony was attended by the President of the Basketball League, club presidents, civilian authority, military, athletes and other guests.
