New Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission takes office

The President of the National Parliament, Maria Fernanda Lay, swore in Rui Pereira as Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission (CAC) at a ceremony held today, July 5th, 2024, and attended by the Prime Minister, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão. 449755838_343245612165107_6105179006380679239_n

Rui Pereira was elected by a majority of votes (41) by the National Parliament on June 24th for the 2024-2028 term.

With a legal career that began in 1996 as a lawyer, Rui Pereira also served as a judge in the Dili Court from 2000 to 2005, participated in the Truth and Friendship Commission, and held advisory positions in State institutions. Between 2010 and 2014, he was Deputy Ombudsman of the Office of the Ombudsman for Human Rights and Justice (PDHJ), and from 2016 to 2018, he served as Vice Commissioner of the CAC. 449849998_343245945498407_8673303411564007891_n

During his four-year term, Rui Pereira will work closely with the Public Prosecutor's Office, the Court of Appeal and the Ministry of Justice to strengthen the country's anti-corruption investigation capabilities.

Sérgio da Costa Hornai, Minister of Justice, Adérito Hugo da Costa, Vice-Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and other members of the National Parliament also attended the swearing-in ceremony.
