Note of Condolence on the Death of Priest Francisco Tavares dos Reis
The Government of Timor-Leste extends its deepest condolences on Father Francisco Tavares dos Reis's passing today, March 7th, 2023, at the age of 78, following a long-term illness.
Father Francis was an invaluable character for the people of Timor-Leste, having dedicated his life to serving the population and promoting the values of solidarity and fraternity.
Father Francisco Tavares dos Reis also played an essential role as confidant and advisor to the former President and leader of the Timorese resistance, Nicolau Lobato, during the struggle for independence. His courage and dedication to the service of the Timorese people will always be remembered, and his memory will remain a source of inspiration for future generations.
The Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak, expressed his sadness over the loss of Father Francisco Tavares, saying that “our thoughts and prayers are with the family, colleagues and friends of the late Father Tavares, that they may find the strength and faith necessary to overcome this particularly difficult time.”
The Government Spokesperson, Minister Fidelis Magalhães, presented his “heartfelt condolences and solidarity with the entire population of Timor-Leste, particularly the parishes where he served and the seminary where he taught” and recalled “his role as an educator, in which he helped to educate and guide the youth throughout his mission”, “always standing by and in defending the population in the most difficult moments”.
