The Government of Timor-Leste has received, with deep sorrow, the news of the passing away of the former President of the People’s Republic of China, Jian Zemin, at age of 96.
Jiang Zemin died in Shanghai on Wednesday, November 30th, 2022, of leukaemia and multiple organ failure.
He was the President of the People’s Republic of China from 1993 to 2003 and Secretary-General of the Chinese Communist Party from 1989 to 2002.
In his letter addressed to the Presidency of the Republic of Timor-Leste, on the occasion of the Restoration of National Independence, in May 2002, Jian Zemin recalled that “the traditional friendship between the Chinese and Timorese people goes back to ancient times”, as a result of exchanges and cooperation in the political, economic, commercial and other fields”, and expressed his willingness “to work tirelessly to constantly promote ties of good neighbourliness and friendship and cooperation between China and Timor-Leste”.
The Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak, highlighted “his role in opening up China to the world and global markets, leading to the country's transformation into a world power”.
The Spokesperson of the Government, Minister Fidelis Magalhães, on behalf of the Council of Ministers and the entire Government, presents his “sincere condolences to the Chinese Government and all the People of the People’s Republic of China, in particular, the entire Chinese community in Timor-Leste”.
