Government expresses solidarity with Cuba
The Government of Timor-Leste extends its solidarity to the Government and people of Cuba, following a major fire in fuel depots, near the city of Matanzas, in western Cuba, about 100 kilometres east of Havana.
Lightning struck a fuel storage tank on Friday, sparking a fire that spread to a second tank on Saturday, resulting in at least one death, 121 people injured and 17 people missing. More than 1,000 residents in the surrounding area were evacuated.
The two burnt tanks are part of a fuel storage area with six other tanks which are used for electricity production.
The Spokesperson of the 8th Constitutional Government, Minister Fidelis Magalhães, expressed, on behalf of the entire Government, that “at this moment our thoughts are with the people of Cuba and in particular with all those who have been personally affected by this terrible fire, and we salute those who remain determined to fight the fire in conditions of extreme difficulty and those who are supporting the populations affected by this disaster".
