Government congratulates World Food Program for the award of the Nobel Peace Prize 2020
The Government of Timor-Leste congratulates the United Nations “World Food Program” for the Nobel Peace Prize 2020 awarding, for “its efforts in the fight against hunger, for its contributions to the improvement of peace conditions in various regions in conflict areas and for having played a major role in preventing the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict”.
This distinction represents a recognition for the important work carried out by this humanitarian organization, which in 2019 provided assistance to almost 100 million people, in 88 countries.
In the Timor-Leste, the World Food Program, in addition to working in close cooperation and coordination with the Government, to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals on the food security and nutrition and fight hunger programs, have been providing important support in responding to COVID-19’s impacts, namely with the humanitarian flight service between Kuala Lumpur and Dili, for passengers and medical cargo, which allowed Timor-Leste to reduce the isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, bringing medical equipment to the country and allowing the circulation of humanitarian professionals from the various agencies present in the country, to support the response to COVID-19.
On behalf of the Government and the Timorese People, the Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and Spokesperson of the Government, Fidelis Manuel Leite Magalhães, wishes to convey his most sincere congratulations and best regards to the entire World Food Program team, for this due recognition for their valuable work and we also welcome the partnership of the World Food Program with the Government of Timor-Leste, to achieve our sustainable development goals.
