Business Forum in Darwin to Highlight Opportunities in Timor-Leste
The Government agency for the promotion of investment and export, TradeInvest Timor-Leste, will be holding a Business Forum in Darwin on Friday the 16th of June. The one-day event at the Hilton Hotel, to be opened by the Chief Minister of the Northern Territory, the Hon Michael Gunner, is set to highlight recent actions that enhance the attractiveness of Timor-Leste’s business environment and explore emerging opportunities for investment.
Reflecting the Government’s commitment to support private investment, the Forum will include the participation of the Minister of State, Coordinator of Economic Affairs, H.E. Estanislau da Silva and the Secretary of State for Arts and Culture, H.E. Isabel Ximenes. The Executive Director of TradeInvest Timor-Leste, Mr. Arcanjo da Silva, will be present to explain the direct role of the agency in engaging with foreign investors and supporting start up and operations.
During the forum Australian participants attending will be able to hear directly from investors currently operating successful businesses in Timor and hear first hand about Timor-Leste’s Special Social Economic Zones. Discussions are to cover a variety of sectors including infrastructure, agriculture and tourism.
In the last two years the Government has proposed and seen enacted a raft of pro-growth legislation. In addition major work has been done to streamline processes in business registration, customs and tax. The Timor-Leste Investment Guide, now available online, outlines some of these changes.
The creation and consolidation of economic infrastructure in Timor-Leste continues at pace. The next few weeks will see the groundbreaking for a new world-class container port being constructed just outside Dili and the inauguration of the new Suai Airport on the country’s south coast. Efforts in the last two years have resulted in the building of 860 kilometers of national roads and the installation of over 2,000 kilometers of low and medium voltage electricity lines.
Spokesperson, Minister of State Agio Pereira, noted “there are significant opportunities opening up in our region. We commend the Business Forum as a way to inform our close neighbours in Northern Australia about the increasing attractiveness of Timor-Leste as a place to invest and do business.”ENDS
