Global Conference on the 2030 Agenda produces Dili Communiqué
At the conclusion of the High Level Meeting of the Global Conference on the 2030 Agenda the Dili Communiqué was produced setting out some of the key themes emerging from the conference discussions. The Communiqué, read by H.E. Momoh Vandi, Sierra Leone’s Vice Minister of Finance and Economic Development, called for “committed leadership and sustained political support” to “ensure that countries affected by conflict and fragility will be at the forefront of the implementation of this global Agenda.”
The meeting was opened by the President of the Republic, H.E. Dr. Francisco Guterres ‘Lú-Olo’ with special video messages delivered by the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres and the President of the UN General Assembly, Ambassador Peter Thompson. The Prime Minister H.E. Dr. Rui Maria de Araújo was present throughout the meeting and participated on the panel discussing A Roadmap for Sustainable Development in Fragile and Conflict-Affected States as well as delivering final remarks at the close of the meeting.
Minister of Planning and Strategic Investment and Eminent Person of the g7+, H.E. Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, gave an account of Timor-Leste’s journey towards peace and resilience. “In the struggle our motto was ‘to resist is to win’, he said ‘but after falling back into conflict it became ‘goodbye conflict, welcome development’”. Reflecting on the current global dynamic Minister Gusmão called on countries to “export peace not weapons”, a comment that was applauded by delegates.
Impassioned interventions from Minister H.E. Yerima Mandjo from the Central African Republic and Mr. Adrop Nuoi Deng from South Sudan highlighted the devastation experienced by countries in crisis and the urgent need to achieve peace and alleviate the suffering of the people.
The Dili Communiqué will be presented in July to the UN High Political Forum and will help inform the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
The conference was considered a success in terms of the quality of discussions, the level of representation and high-level support. The UN Secretary-General’s special envoy for the event and Assistant Administrator and Director of the Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific, Mr. Haoliang Xu, said that the event and the resulting Communiqué has made and will continue to make an important contribution to the implementation of the UN Agenda 2030.
During the meeting Timor-Leste’s Roadmap for the Implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs was launched.ENDS
