Government of Timor-Leste to hold landmark Global Conference on 2030 Agenda

Local and international delegates are set to participate in a landmark Global Conference focusing on the United Nations 2030 Agenda taking place in Dili on the 22nd and 23rd of May 2017. The Government has organized the conference in partnership with the international members of the informal High-Level Support Group for the Sustainable Development Goals [SDGs] and the g7+ Secretariat to consider A Roadmap for SDGs in Fragile and Conflict-Affected States.

The Prime Minister H.E. Dr. Rui Maria de Araújo said “Timor-Leste is honoured, as a post-conflict country on the path towards sustainable development, to share its own experience with the Sustainable Development Goals implementation’ and to contribute ‘towards the global commitment to implement the Agenda 2030 that will guarantee a better future not only for the Timorese but also everyone in our planet.”

 On the 22nd of May high-level representatives of the Governments of Sweden and Sierra Leone, senior officials of the United Nations and ASEAN, and representatives of academia, civil society and the private sector will be amongst those joining Timorese leaders at the Dili Convention Centre. The newly sworn in President of the Republic H.E. Francisco Guterres Lu-Olo, Prime Minister H.E. Dr. Rui Maria de Araújo, Minister of Planning and Investment, H.E. Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão and former President of Timor-Leste and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, H.E. Dr. José Ramos-Horta are amongst those who will participate in a program discussing Peace as a Precursor to Sustainable Development, A Roadmap for Sustainable Development in Fragile and Conflict-Affected States and Effective Partnerships for the 2030 Agenda ‘Leaving no one behind’. At the conclusion of the first day a Conference Declaration will be released.

The conference shifts gear on the morning of the 23rd of May with a Technical Meeting bringing together senior officials from the g7+ countries and beyond to discuss milestones and lessons learned to date in SDG implementation.

Two Conference Side Events are scheduled. The first on Economic Diversification in the SDGs Era takes place on the morning of the 21st of May and will see the launch of the first Investment Guide published by TradeInvest Timor-Leste. An associated Expo will be set up to highlight opportunities for investment in Timor-Leste and showcase private sector activity. Economic Diversification is a key policy priority of the Sixth Constitutional Government

The second Side Event, Health in the Era of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, ‘Programa Saúde na Família’, scheduled for the morning of the 23rd of May, will look at the progress of Timor-Leste’s innovative Program of Health in the Family and how it is bringing together technology and nation-wide home visits to advance SDG implementation in the area of health.

The Government thanks partners including the g7+, the Governments of Sweden and New Zealand, the Islamic Development Bank, the UN and UNDP, the United States Embassy in Timor-Leste, and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry-TL, and looks forward to making this contribution to support the implementation of the SDGs globally through increasing collaboration and advancing clear thinking.
