The National Directorate for Basic Education, from the Ministry of Education (MoE), organized a workshop in Díli, on February 21st, on the National Quality Standard for Schools. This standard will become the guide to improve Basic Education in Timor-Leste.

The General Director for Pre-School Education of Basic Education (PSE-BE), Cidálio Leite, in his opening speech, highlighted that “the event is important for sharing and discussing ideas with the participants, as a way to improve the draft of the National Quality Standard for Schools, already developed”.

The General Director thanked UNICEF, which, as a partner for Education, has hired specialists who worked on this draft, has financially supported this workshop and has been contributing since the independence.

The Head of PSE-BE also explained that, before the document is submitted for approval of the Minister for Education, he will organize a workshop with the aim of sharing it with Education Partners.

The Ministry of Education takes two major missions in this area: to promote the access to education by every child and to reinforce the quality of education.

The National Director for Basic Education, Alfredo de Araújo, thanked the participants for the sharing of ideas on finishing this document.

The National Quality Standard for Schools, which has already started being previously developed, is now, with this national workshop, in its final stage.

The representative for UNICEF in Timor-Leste, Taka Ho, manifested his organization’s compromise of continuing to support education, particularly Basic Education: “it was an honour for UNICEF. We are always willing to cooperate with the Ministry of Education, in searching of partners for the development of the national standard for Education.

It is intended that the new school shall be innovative and active, by promoting an education of quality, through the participation of children and the subsequent approach to education.
