Government continues potable water project in urban areas
The Secretary of State of Water, Sanitation and Urban Development, Elias Pereira Moniz, together with the representative of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Timor-Leste, Shane Rosenthal, inaugurated, on July 18th, the project for urban supply of drinking water, in “4 de Setembro” Village, Kintal-boot, suco of Santa Cruz, subdistrict of Na’in-Feto, Dili’s district.
With the inauguration of the drinking water supply, through the hydraulical system, the aim is to improve living conditions for families, traders, institutions and inhabitants of the capital.
The Secretary of State of Water, Sanitation and Urban Development, said “The Government of Timor-Leste had the support of the Asian Development Bank, in this project”.
Elias Pereira Moniz added “the Ministry of Public Works tries to implement the goals defined in the Strategic Development Plan of Timor-Leste”.
It is a pilot project to be also implemented in other zones and in the remaining capitals of the districts.
The Director of Water and Sanitation Services (WSS), Gustavo da Cruz, explained that “according to the map, the supply system of the city of Dili, is spread over 10 zones, according to the Decree-Law n. 4/2004, that approves the Regime for the Water Supply for Public Consumption. The National Directorate for Water and Sanitation Services outlines plans and annual programs to answer community’s needs, taking into account the water consumption”.
The drinking water supply project in the city of Dili is divided in three different zones: zone I, which includes the sucos of Kampung Alor and Fatu-Hada, zone 2 with one single suco, Bairro Pité, and Zone III, which includes the sucos of Santa Cruz and Bemori.
Gustavo da Cruz said that “the establishment of the drinking water’s tariff will begin in August”.
According to the ADB representative in Timor-Leste, “we were already able to carry out the project of water supply for the community in the three zones of Dili and in other districts”. Shane Rosenthal appealed to the ''contribution of everyone, being diligent in the operation and maintenance of the installed system, so that it could respond to community’s needs in long term”.
