Government receives assets donated by UNMIT

On Monday 21 January 2013 representatives of the Timorese Government received some assets from representatives of UNMIT during a ceremony that took place at Obrigado Barracks Compound II.
The representative of UNMIT, Tom Soyer, in his capacity as Head of Information and Communication Office, mentioned in the occasion that the handover of UNMIT assets to the Government of Timor-Leste consists of equipment and of part of UNMIT infrastructure (Obrigado Barracks Compound II and respective furniture). The equipment handed over includes 74 vehicles, 223 computers, and 2 power-generators.
Representing the Government, the Director-General of the Ministry of Finance, Antonio Freitas, emphasized that the Directorate of State Assets has identified the equipment and the infrastructure and confirmed that they are in good condition, particularly the vehicles which are less than 3 years, which is in line with Government’s requirements insofar as vehicles are concerned.
Responding to journalists, Mr. Freitas stated that the government has decided not to purchase new vehicles in 2013. Instead, the respective budget allocation will be used for maintenance of vehicles, including those donated by UNMIT.
Distribution and use of these assets will be decided upon by the Government through the Ministry of Finance, which presides over the Handover Committee.
Besides Tom Soyer from UNMIT and Antonio Freitas from the Government, in attendance were other UNMIT staff members, government National Directors, the Director of State Assets, the Director of Oil Revenues and the Director of Domestic Revenues.
