Prime Minister's Visit to Bali and Haiti

The Government approved at the extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers of November 20, the allocation of one million dollars of financial aid to Haiti for humanitarian assistance to the population affected by Hurricane Sandy.

This aid had already been announced by the Prime Minister, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, during his visit to Haiti, where he also participated in the g7+ Ministerial Retreat, held on 13 and 14 November.

On the eve of the meeting of the g7+, the Prime Minister and his delegation (Minister of Finance, Emília Pires and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Constâncio Pinto) held a series of bilateral meetings with the President, the Prime Minister and with several ministers of the Republic of Haiti. Several issues were analyzed including Timor-Leste’s transition as the United Nations Mission withdraws, the coordination of development partners, rebuilding efforts in Haiti and further opportunities to strengthen ties and cooperation.

Following bilateral meetings with the authorities of Haiti, the Second g7+ Ministerial Retreat took place in the capital, Port au Prince. This was a two-days working meetings with ministers and focal points from countries of the g7+. At the end of the meeting the "Declaration of Haiti," was published announcing the official addition of the Union of Comoros to the g7+ family.

Before the trip to Haiti, Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão participated in the Bali Democracy Forum V held in Nusa Dua, Bali, on November 8 and 9, 2012. The Head of the Government of Timor-Leste ha been guest of this international event since its first edition in 2008.

Also in Bali, a High Level Trilateral meeting was held between Indonesia, Australia and Timor-Leste. Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Prime Minister Julia Gillard of Australia expressed a strong desire, along with Timor-Leste to focus on improving cooperation to benefit all three countries, thus contributing to stability, democracy and development in the region. At this meeting, the three countries expressed an intention to establish technical teams next year to initiate an integrated action plan. Timor-Leste has offered to host this meeting.
