Prime Minister’s visit to Australia

The Prime Minister has returned from his seven day visit to Australia. During the Official Guest of Government visit he discussed bi-lateral relations and enhanced cooperation with the Prime Minister of Australia as well as the Premier and the Governor of New South Wales and the Acting Premier and the Governor of Victoria. Prime Minister Gusmão promoted increased foreign investment and the development of the Timorese private sector in meetings with the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and a reception with the Australia Timor-Leste Business Council.

As well as meeting with DLA Piper, the largest law firm in the world, to discuss its Timorese pro bono commercial law program, the Prime Minister met with the Balibo House Trust which presented its heritage inspired architectural design for the development of the Balibo Fort.

To create opportunities for greater awareness of Timor-Leste the Prime Minister launched a book of collected speeches, “Xanana Gusmão: Strategies for the Future”, in both Sydney and Melbourne.

In Sydney, the Prime Minister attended commemorations for the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Timor which included opening a exhibition at the ANZAC Memorial.

During the visit the Prime Minister also met with the CEO of Woodside and was briefed on the progress of the Díli Drainage and Sanitation Master Plan which is being supported by Melbourne Water and Yarra Valley Water.
