Vice-Minister of Finance meets with the Ambassador of Brazil

On February 3, Rui Manuel Hanjam, Vice-Minister of Finance, received a delegation from Brazil led by the Brazilian Ambassador in Timor-Leste, Edson Monteiro. This meeting sought to strengthen ties of friendship and cooperation that unite the two countries and identify areas of need in which the Brazilian government may invest in education.
At the meeting, attended by several representatives of the Brazilian education system, including the Director-General of the School of Public Financial Management, the Vice-Minister of Finance stressed the importance of cooperation with Brazil in regard to language barriers and the strengthening the capacity of employees. It was also noted that is essential to continue this work as well as invest in the areas of customs, accounting, taxation as well as the legal section of the National Directorate for Oil Revenues.
Timor-Leste’s macroeconomic context and economic and statistics were also discussed. Recognizing the importance of preparing the State Budget and improving public finance management, the Vice-Minister of Finance and the Director-General of Cooperative Services, Santina Cardoso, identified some of the challenges and weaknesses that the Government of Brazil could provide assistance including through a training program in Timor-Leste as well as sending Timorese public servants to Brazil.
Finally, the Brazilian Ambassador, Edson Monteiro, stressed that the ultimate aim of the cooperation and support of Brazil in Timor-Leste is to achieve the sustainability of human resources by providing employees with the language skills and techniques necessary for the efficient performance of their duties.
