Secretary of State for Fisheries Appears in a New Episode of the “Government Page” TV Show
The Secretary of State for Fisheries, Domingos da Conceição dos Santos, participated today, July 23rd, 2026, in recording a new episode of the “Government Page” TV show. The discussion focused primarily on the Government’s strategies to develop the fisheries sector in Timor-Leste as a key pillar of economic diversification, food security, and sustainable national development.

During the interview, the Secretary of State highlighted the Government’s vision to transform Timor-Leste’s rich marine resources into a strategic economic sector that can create jobs, increase household income, strengthen food security, and expand export opportunities, while ensuring the sustainable management of marine ecosystems.
This member of the Government said that maritime patrols and surveillance are being intensified throughout Timor-Leste’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) to combat illegal fishing, particularly by foreign vessels. Efforts are also underway to improve coordination among the Maritime Police, the National Maritime Authority, and other relevant institutions, and to expand cooperation with regional and international partners. These measures aim to protect the country’s marine resources, safeguard national sovereignty, and ensure the sustainability of local fishing communities’ livelihoods.
The interview concluded with an overview of planned reforms to commercial fishing licensing, aimed at ensuring the responsible and sustainable exploitation of marine resources in the medium and long term. The Government also aims to attract more private investment in fisheries and aquaculture, while advancing the establishment of the National Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture to strengthen research, innovation, and institutional capacity across the sector.
