Prime Minister and members of the government congratulate Timorese students who won medals at international science competitions in the Philippines and Malaysia
Timorese students won one gold, three silver, and two bronze medals at the 11th edition of the ASEAN Plus Three Junior Science Odyssey (APT JSO), an international science competition held in the Philippines from July 5th to 11th.
This annual competition brings together students from ASEAN member states and three partner countries in Northeast Asia—China, Japan, and South Korea—to promote scientific knowledge, innovation, creativity, and regional cooperation. It also fosters collaboration across science, sustainability, and the development of 21st-century skills.
Timor-Leste was represented by six students from schools in Dili: Alandrinho Corbafo Caunan of Colégio Paulo VI; Angelica da Costa Sequeira of EBC Bidau Akadiruhun; Mendelina de Carmen Mascarenhas of EBC 30 de Agosto; Nelia Patricio Soares of EBC São Pedro; Peter Carlos Chima Anaje of EBC São José Operário; and Salvador da Costa Pacheco of EBC Esperança da Pátria.
A few days later, students from EBC Teulale (ESSA Senior) and St. António de Teulale Secondary School (ESSA Senior) in Baucau won 10 medals and the Youth Ambassador Award for their outstanding performance at the International Conference on Science, Technology, Innovation, and Creativity (STICK2020).
The Timor-Leste delegation won five gold and five silver medals at this international competition in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM), held in Kuala Lumpur from July 15th to 19th, marking the country’s best performance at this annual event. The five gold medals were won by Angel Grace Costa De La Rosa, Yinei Doena Maria Da Costa Belo, Jeninho Geovanio Maria Alves Xavier, Geovania Bruno Sarmento, and Brigida Filita Da Costa Guterres, while the silver medals were won by Florbella Ezania Osório Da Silva, Letícia Greydis Costa Valente, Jolly Petra Daol, Genijia Lucilia Imaculada Pereira, and Herfia Febiana Carlos.
The STICK competition brings together students, teachers, researchers, and young innovators from around the world to present scientific research and innovation projects that foster critical thinking, creativity, scientific communication, and international collaboration.
These students also received recognition from the Government before this morning’s Council of Ministers meeting. Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, together with members of the Government, congratulated the students, teachers, and school administrators on their performance and outstanding achievements at this international event. The Prime Minister praised the students’ dedication, perseverance, and talents, noting that their success is a source of national pride and an inspiration to other Timorese as they pursue excellence in science, technology, innovation, and education.
