PNTL Projects in development

The Secretariat of State for Security (SoSS) is developing PNTL through several activities. One of the most important ones is the Police’s capacity building. The objective is to raise the security agents’ capacity, knowledge and work, but also the drafting of laws for a better and more effective performance. The Secretary of State for Security highlights the fact that PNTL is a community police, to whom “it is demanded a higher capacity to work with the community”.
A new recruitment for agents is being prepared, one that will be carried out taking into account new criteria such as: age, gender of the candidates and also new methods, that will make the process easier and more transparent. The training of future police officers was also improved and extended.
Also a priority is the improvement of the PNTL buildings conditions, as well as their equipments and vehicles.
In the SoSS Strategic Plan the continuity of the PNTL promotions is also predicted, a measure that is intended to motivate the agents to improve their performance in order to progress in their career.
“With these measures we are motivating the Police to work better with the community. We want to prevent conflicts instead of resolving them. For that, we also need the population’s complicity and support”, highlights Francisco Guterres.
Despite the fact that is priority is given to prevention, the PNTL still guarantees the possibility of having to resort to force so as to resolve conflicts, having thus, for that reason, created an intervention force, a reserve police for more complicated cases.
