Government launches the Second Timor-Leste EITI Report

Last March 25, at the Dili Convention Centre, the IV Constitutional Government, through the Secretariat of State for Natural Resources, made the official launch of Timor-Leste’s 2nd Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) report.

“Timor-Leste deserves to celebrate this success. The report about the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative divulges the value that the oil and gas companies pay to the Government and the income acquired by the Government through the companies that operate in the Timor Sea. This report shows that Timor-Leste has a solid and transparent financial system”, defended the Secretary of State for Natural Resources, Alfredo Pires.

“This initiative’s implementation, has enabled Timor-Leste, on July 1st, 2010, to become the first Asia Pacific country, and third in the world, that fulfil the EITI rules, which guarantee the transparency and responsibility in resource-rich nations . In the 2010 Revenue Watch Index, Timor-Leste was classified in 12th place, followed by the United States of America”, reminded the Secretary of State for Natural Resources.

The President of the Economy, Finance and Anti-Corruption Commission (National Parliament’s Commission C), Manuel Tilman, representing the President of the National Parliament, considered that the transparency culture should be rigorous therefore it’s very important that it is of everyone’s knowledge.

The report is written in four languages: Tétum, English, Portuguese and Indonesian, to be distributed through the national NGO’s, F-FDTL and PNTL, academic institutions and community leaders.
