On Sunday, March 27, the Timor-Leste National Police (PNTL) celebrated its 11st anniversary in the Government Palace.

“I very much appreciate the leadership of Commissioner Longuinhos Monteiro and Afonso de Jesus, who exercise their functions with professionalism and dedication. They deserve my trust, as Minister of Defence and Security, which I also expect from the other institutions and from the population”, said the Prime Minister and Minister of Defence and Security in his speech.

“Today we start the day with joy. The Timor-Leste National Police receives, from UNPOL, the responsibility of our country’s security, thus you have to commit yourselves to exercise your functions as police officers with responsibility and professionalism to better serve the people and the nation”, added Xanana Gusmão.

In the same occasion, the Commander Longuinhos Monteiro stated: “I want to thank, on PNTL’s behalf, the effort made by the Government to determine the compromise of PNTL’s new mission, as the institution that has the responsibility for the State’s security and has responsibility in the fulfilling of the constitutional duties and obligations. I also want to thank the UNPOL Commander, Luís Carrilho, and to all his colleagues that throughout this period have accompanied my officers with patience and dedication, as partners of the PNTL.”

“We are happy with the trust given to us, I ask all of you to be committed to fulfil the dreams that we had in times, not only in what concerns the symbolic moments, like this one today, but essentially in the responsibility, duty and obligation in serving our country with pride, sacrifice and dedication” added Longuinhos Monteiro

This year, in the PNTL anniversary celebration, the transference of the executive power regarding security from UNPOL to PNTL was made, merit and solidarity decoration medals were delivered, the signature of an memorandum of understanding was signed between BNN RI (Badan Narkotika Nasional Republik Indonésia, this is, Republic of Indonesia Narcotic National Body) and PNTL and recognition certificates were delivered for the role carried out by the PNTL officers, sergeants and agents with Good and Very Good classification.
