Road and school renovation works inaugurated in Quelicai

The Secretary of State for Local Development, Mateus W. dos Santos Tallo, accompanied by the President of the Municipal Authority of Baucau, Veneranda Lemos Martins, inaugurated two rehabilitation projects on January 20th, 2026: one for a road and another for a school in Quelicai, in Macalaco Village (Suco), Administrative Post of Quelicai, municipality of Baucau. 618372282_122293719872030366_1046978077642466798_n 615768445_122293719944030366_835990203458486374_n

The rehabilitation project for the two-kilometre concrete road had a budget of approximately US$34,000, while the rehabilitation of the three-classroom secondary school represented an investment of US$22,000, both financed by the National Sucos Development Program.

In his remarks, the Secretary of State expressed satisfaction with the projects' completion, noting that the road's rehabilitation will benefit the local population by boosting the economy and improving access to water, electricity, and other essential services.

Mateus Tallo also emphasised that the delivery of the new school infrastructure represents an investment in the future of children and the country, noting that one of the PNDS’s priorities is to improve and modernise educational infrastructure in rural areas. At the end of his speech, he called on local authorities and the community to preserve and maintain the works to ensure their durability over time.

The Chief of Macalaco expressed his satisfaction and pride in the completion of the projects, noting that they meet the community’s real needs, particularly in access to education and improved connectivity, with an impact on local economic development, access to health care, market connections, and day-to-day economic activities.

Public administration directors, the Chief of Staff of the Baucau Municipal Authority, representatives of the PNTL and F-FDTL, the Administrative Post Administrator, village authorities, veterans, members of the PNDS team at the village (suco) level, the local community, and students also attended the ceremony.
