Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports of Portugal meets with Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão within the framework of the XII CPLP Games

The Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sports of Portugal, Margarida Balseiro Lopes, met with Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão on July 25th, 2025, to express the Portuguese Government's appreciation for the hospitality shown by Timor-Leste to the delegations participating in the XII Sports Games of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP). At the meeting, the minister highlighted “the warm welcome of the Timorese people” and conveyed, on behalf of Portugal, a message of esteem to the Head of the Timorese Government.
The Portuguese Minister's visit to Timor-Leste takes place in the context of the CPLP Games and the XVI Conference of Ministers of Culture, Youth and Sport of the Portuguese-speaking Community, which will take place on the 27th in Dili. Participation in these events aims to strengthen cooperation ties in the Portuguese-speaking world and underline the common commitment to youth and cultural development among member countries.
After meeting with the Prime Minister, Margarida Balseiro Lopes said that “the CPLP Games are more than just a sports competition—they are an opportunity to strengthen the ties that unite us. We share a language, but also a deep relationship of friendship and esteem.”
The meeting was also attended by the Minister of Youth, Sports, Arts, and Culture, Nelyo Isaac Sarmento.
During her stay in the country, the Minister attended several competitions, including soccer, karate, and basketball, praising the performance of the participating delegations.
