Timor-Leste Elected Vice-President of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly

On June 2nd, 2025, the United Nations General Assembly elected Timor-Leste as one of the Vice-Presidents of its 80th Session. Timor-Leste will be represented by the Permanent Mission to the United Nations, and the country's Permanent Representative, Dionisio Babo Soares, will contribute, in coordination with the other Vice-Presidents and Member States, to defining the agenda and the outcomes of the session.
The 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, under the slogan “Better Together”, will take place between September 2025 and September 2026, with the formal start on September 9th, 2025, at the United Nations headquarters in New York. This body annually brings together representatives from all UN member states to discuss and deliberate on the main issues on the international agenda, including peace and security, sustainable development, human rights and UN reform.
The presidency of the 80th session of the General Assembly will be held by Annalena Baerbock, former German Foreign Minister. In addition to the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council - China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States - 16 other Vice-Presidents were elected, representing the various regions of the world: Andorra, Argentina, Bangladesh, Cabo Verde, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Lebanon, Lesotho, the Maldives, Montenegro, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saudi Arabia, Timor-Leste, Tunisia and Venezuela.
