Strengthen the Timorese Woman

The Secretariat of State for the Promotion of Equality is developing a program for the Economic Strengthening of Women, which has the objective of providing financial capacity to Timorese women, especially those that need it the most.
Taking into account the social differences between genders (men and women) are big, especially in the most isolated areas, SEPI created “this program to promote equality between man and woman, and so women can also participate actively in National development”, explains Maria Filomena Babo Martins, SEPI Head of the Department of Training and Education, adding: “the question is: How can women contribute to nation development? And how can SEPI help if the majority of women are housewives? We answer these doubts with the development of the program “Economic Strengthening of Women”, that is one of the many forms to give strength and autonomy to housewives. We give finance support and training. With this orientation, women can continue to do the house work but can also have a parallel activity that gives them a certain economic autonomy. They can have a work that supports them and their family.
