Population requests sanitation to be a priority

September 4th, the day that the Prime Minister visited the sub-district Nain Feto, Díli district, for the National Development Strategic Plan (NDSP) consultation, was an important day for the Timorese. On the same day, eleven years ago, the Timorese were waiting for the Referendum result.
Felix M. M. da Costa Gusmão, Nain Feto sub-district Administrator, which is composed of 6 sucos and 38 villages, informed on the sectors where the population felt more difficulties: economy, health, education and social solidarity. Issues regarding land and property, infrastructures, citizens’ conditions of life, human and natural resources were also motives to call for the attention of the members of Government.
The Suco Chiefs were also heard, requesting water distribution, rehabilitation of sewage and solid waste dumping sites. The need for a home for most needy, the creation of a youth centre, courses and training for the suco’s youth and financial support, equipments for the Timor Women’s Organization were also others complaints. According to the Suco Chiefs, the suco headquarters itself also needs computers, sanitation installations and water.
The Prime Minister, regarding the necessities presented, answered that the NSDP implementation will not be difficult since these types of difficulties have already been fitted into the 2008, 2009 and 2010 budgets.
“The Government has a sum allocated to resolve this type of difficulties, which were created by us, in 2006. They are a result of our misunderstandings because we weren’t capable of recognizing those who have already died, that gave their lives for the Country’s liberation, because we felt that our right is superior to the needs of others and all that originated the 2006 crisis”.
For all this, Xanana Gusmão appealed so that the same mistakes of 2006 aren’t repeated, because then independence wouldn’t make sense.
