Dialogue and celebration mark the visit of the Secretary of State for Vocational Training and Employment to the Timorese community in South Korea
The Secretary of State for Vocational Training and Employment (SEFOPE), Rogério Araújo Mendonça, officially visited South Korea on September 15th and 16th, 2024. During the visit, accompanied by Timor-Leste's Ambassador to South Korea, Gregório de Sousa, and Cardinal Dom Virgílio do Carmo da Silva, the Secretary of State met with Timorese workers in an atmosphere of dialogue and celebration, focused on strengthening the community.
On September 15th, in Seoul, the Timorese workers warmly welcomed the delegation at a cultural celebration. During the visit, 321 workers and their children participated in a baptism ceremony presided over by Cardinal Dom Virgílio do Carmo da Silva. This was followed by a community dinner that reinforced the spirit of brotherhood among those present.
On the second day of the visit, September 16th, the Secretary of State participated in a dialogue with Timorese workers in Asan as part of the celebrations for the 14th anniversary of the Amicus Association. During the event, Rogério Araújo Mendonça praised the role of the Union of Timor-Leste Workers in South Korea (UTTLCS) for its importance in supporting the community, highlighting its ability to mediate and resolve issues related to health, employment, and labour conflicts.
“The Union of Timor-Leste Workers in South Korea has done an exemplary job in supporting our citizens who work here. Compared to other countries, you stand out for the organisation and solidarity you show towards each other. The union is an essential mediator, especially in difficult situations such as health issues, loss of employment or labour disagreements”, said the Secretary of State in his remarks.
Rogério Araújo Mendonça also stressed the importance of continuous improvements in the conditions of workers abroad, referring to the workers' suggestions made in the previous year, which resulted in concrete actions to improve administrative processes and reduce the costs associated with labour documentation.
The Secretary of State also participated in the 14th Amicus Cup, a sports competition involving 25 clubs comprising Timorese workers and students in South Korea. In his speech, he emphasised the importance of sports in strengthening the bonds of friendship and unity between the Timorese community abroad. “This tournament is not just a competition but a moment of conviviality and camaraderie. May this spirit of friendship accompany you in all areas of your lives, " the Secretary of State encouraged.
