The Prime Minister, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, will be absent from the country between September 18th to 30th, 2024, to attend the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, which will take place in New York, United States of America.

The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, which began on September 10th, 2024, and has the first day of the high-level General Debate on September 24th, will focus on the theme: “Leaving no one behind: Acting together to advance peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations.”

At the Future Summit, to be held during the September 22 to 23 session, Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão and other world leaders will come together to tackle critical challenges in global governance. The summit aims to reaffirm commitments to the Sustainable Development Goals and the United Nations Charter, while strengthening cooperation and laying the foundations for a reinvigorated multilateral system. The summit will result in a Compact for the Future, which aims to strengthen global cooperation and adapt effectively to today's challenges for the benefit of all.

The United Nations General Assembly is the organization's main political decision-making body, providing a forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the UN Charter. Each of the 193 Member-States has equal votes.

During the Prime Minister's absence, the Vice Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Francisco Kabualdi Lay, will coordinate the government.
