Timor-Leste Celebrates the 25th Anniversary of the Popular Consultation

The commemorations of the 25th Anniversary of the Popular Consultation of August 30th, 1999 will take place throughout the country, with members of the Government present at each national administrative post. This historic date, which marked a fundamental turning point in Timor-Leste's history, will be marked with a series of events between August 28 and 30, 2024, involving national and international leaders, as well as the active participation of the population.

Under the theme “It was the People Who Fought! It was the People Who Suffered! It was the People Who Won the Fight!!! The People are the Great Heroes of Independence!!!”, this year's celebrations highlight the crucial role of the Timorese people in achieving their independence.

In Dili, the main celebrations will take place at the Dili Municipal Stadium and will also include a solemn session at the National Parliament, exhibitions at the Archives & Museum of Timorese Resistance and an official dinner at the Lahane Noble Palace. The event will be attended by a number of international figures, including current and former heads of state and government, as well as other prominent leaders and personalities, including the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

The festivities will include a series of activities, such as concerts, marches, cultural performances and official speeches, to celebrate the resilience and triumph of the Timorese people.

The Government of Timor-Leste invites all citizens to actively participate in these celebrations, which are a testimony to the spirit of resistance, sacrifice and victory of the Timorese people.
