Between July 22nd to 25th, 2024, the Training of Trainers event for the second phase of the Ethics in Sport Plan of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (PED CPLP II) was held at the premises of the Timor-Leste Red Cross in Dili. The event was attended by 40 physical education teachers, coaches and trainers from various sports federations, including athletics, taekwondo, chess and paralympic sports.

The opening session was chaired by the Acting Minister for Youth, Sport, Art and Culture and Secretary of State for Arts and Culture, Jorge Soares Cristóvão. In his speech, the Acting Minister stressed the importance of sporting ethics, encouraging the participants to absorb the knowledge imparted in order to apply it to their professional practices and spread these values to their students. Jorge Soares Cristóvão also highlighted the relevance of the training as an essential guide for the 12th CPLP Sports Games, which Timor-Leste will host in 2025.

The training was conducted by José Lima, Coordinator of PED CPLP II, and Portuguese trainer André Carvalho, both specialists in the field of sports ethics. The program covered topics such as promoting ethical behavior, conflict prevention and creating a positive and inclusive environment in sports.

João M. Rodrigues, Director General of Sport, emphasized the importance of this training for the preparation of human resources, including coaches, teachers and referees, with a view to the next CPLP Games, scheduled for 17th to 27th July 2025. “This training is essential to ensure that everyone involved is aligned with the ethical principles that guide sport,” said João Rodrigues.

The Ethics in Sport Plan of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (PED CPLP II) is an initiative designed to promote ethics and values in sport among the CPLP countries. The program aims to train coaches, educators and other professionals linked to sport, providing them with tools to implement ethical practices and responsible behavior. The training includes modules on the importance of integrity, fair play, inclusion and the prevention of unsportsmanlike behavior, with the aim of creating a healthy and sustainable sports culture.

Timor-Leste will host the 12th CPLP Sports Games in July 2025, a multi-sports event that will bring together participants under the age of 16 from the nine CPLP countries. Initially scheduled for 2020, the event was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
