Government and CPLP signed a Memorandum of Understanding to Promote the Portuguese language and Develop Audiovisual Projects with RTTL

On June 21st, 2024, the Government of the Republic Democratic of the Timor-Leste, represented by the Secretary of State for Social Communication, Expedito Dias Ximenes, and the Executive Secretariat of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), represented by the Executive Secretary, Zacarias da Costa, signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at promoting the sharing of audiovisual content and the joint development of projects between the CPLP and Radio and Television of Timor-Leste (RTTL). WhatsApp Image 2024-06-24 at 11.40.04

The Memorandum of Understanding aims to establish a cooperative relationship between the parties to promote and disseminate the Portuguese language and the CPLP’s institutional activities in Timor-Leste. Through this partnership, audiovisual content will be shared, and support will be provided for the design and implementation of projects aimed at RTTL staff and strengthening its technical resources. WhatsApp Image 2024-06-24 at 11.40.03

The Executive Secretary of the CPLP, Zacarias da Costa, said that “the instrument represents a significant milestone in the promotion of the Portuguese language in Timor-Leste, as it aims to strengthen language dissemination through collaboration in areas such as the production of audiovisual content and the training of communication professionals”. He added that “through this memorandum, we reiterate our joint commitment to expanding the use and appropriation of Portuguese in the country, thus contributing to greater integration and cooperation in our community”. WhatsApp Image 2024-06-24 at 11.40.05 (1)

Timor-Leste’s Secretary of State for Social Communication, Expedito Dias Ximenes, stressed that the CPLP “represents a unique platform for sharing common experiences, cultures and values, engaging in the Portuguese language as the transversal link that unites us” and that mutual knowledge is “essential for building solid bridges”.

Representatives from several CPLP member states attended the signing ceremony, including Ambassador Laura Soares Abrantes, Permanent Representative of Timor-Leste to the CPLP; Ambassador Juliano Féres Nascimento, Permanent Representative of Brazil to the CPLP; and representatives from Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique. The Timorese delegation included, among others, Madalena Pereira Carlos, member of RTTL's Board of Directors; João Guterres, Director of Information and member of RTTL's Board of Directors; and councillor Aviano Faria.
