Minister of Economy and Development at the Pacific Island Investment Conference

The Ministry of Economy and Development, João Mendes Gonçalves, went to Sydney to participate as a speaker in the Pacific Island Investment Conference, which took place on the 12th and 13th August, at the Dockside Conference Centre, in Darling Harbour, Sydney, organized by Business Advantage International and by the Pacific Island Trade & Invest.

This Conference counted with the participation of several international individualities, such as ANZ Bank, European Investment Bank, Asian Development Bank, International Finance Corporation, among others. The Minister of Economy spoke about the Timor-Leste social-economic reality, calling the attention for the challenge that the country faces what concerns the catchment of new investments in the agriculture, fisheries, tourism among other areas, underlinin still the importance of the Pipeline construction in the South Coast as essential for the country’s development.

The Minister meet with several investors, namely with the ex-leader of the Liberal Party, Kerry Chikaorvki, with the President of the Australia Timor-Leste Business Council. João Mendes Gonçalves gave an interview to the ABC – Australia Broadcasting Corporation, Rádio Austrália and participated in a lecture intituled “Goodbye conflict, welcome development” at the Australian Institute of International Affairs for a room full with several company representatives and investors, Non Governmental Organizations, Universities and Civil Society. Besides pointing out the investment opportunities in Timor-Leste, the Ministry still tackled, the advantages of the Pipeline construction to Timor-Leste and the creation of jobs for the local population in the short and long term.
