Prime Minister, at Global Citizen NOW: Melbourne, highlights the importance of dialogue and promoting peace
The Prime Minister, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, highlighted the pressing need for dialogue and the promotion of peace as fundamental cornerstones in eliminating extreme global poverty during his participation in the opening of Global Citizen NOW: Melbourne, an event that brought together leaders from Australia and the Asia-Pacific region on March 5th and 6th in Melbourne, Australia.
In its third edition, Global Citizen NOW: Melbourne provided a space for diverse voices, from world leaders to activists, to discuss crucial issues such as climate change and global poverty.
The Head of Government participated in the “Addressing Global Challenges in the Asia-Pacific” opening panel. During his speech, Prime Minister Gusmão addressed the urgent problems faced by vulnerable communities worldwide, urging global citizens to collectively reflect on how to promote a change of mentality among world leaders.
Xanana Gusmão shared his vision of the role of the g7+, an organisation co-founded by Timor-Leste that brings together countries in conflict or post-conflict situations. He highlighted the organisation's growth, from the initial seven countries to the current 20 member countries, including the last one to join, Yemen, a country that has been at war for several years and forgotten by many.
The Prime Minister addressed various global conflicts, such as the tragedy in Myanmar, emphasising the need for collective action. He also mentioned the situations in Gaza, Ukraine, and several African countries, stating that extreme poverty is intrinsically linked to conflicts and urging the international community to redouble its efforts to facilitate dialogue and avoid war.
Xanana Gusmão also made a unique appeal to young people and activists, encouraging them to continue fighting to change the mentality of world leaders.
On environmental issues, the Prime Minister emphasised the uniqueness of the island of Ataúro, located in Timor-Leste, which is home to the world's most tremendous diversity. Xanana Gusmão invited everyone to visit Ataúro and emphasised the priority of adopting measures to protect the environment.
