During a meeting with the Association of Timorese Students in Japan (AETJ) on December 15th, 2023, in the Japanese capital, Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão encouraged Timorese students in Japan to make the most of their study opportunities to prepare themselves adequately and contribute to the development of Timor-Leste's human resources in the future.

The Head of Government emphasised the importance of discipline, dedication and compliance with the rules established by Japanese universities to complete their studies successfully.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the association's initiative to promote discipline among students, emphasising the importance of preserving Timorese cultural identity and sharing it with other communities.

The President of the AETJ, Geovania Garret Mouzinho Freitas, asked for support to organise the association's activities, promote Timorese culture and create a platform to connect students in academic and other activities.

This association currently gathers around 42 students, some of whom benefit from scholarships from the Timorese Government and others from the Japanese Government. AETJ's mission is to be a support platform for Timorese students in Japan, to ensure their academic success, overcome the challenges they face during their studies and promote Timor-Leste to the Japanese and international community.

Timor-Leste's Ambassador to Japan, Ilidio da Costa Ximenes, expressed his gratitude for the meeting and highlighted the active cooperation that exists between the students and the Timor-Leste Embassy in Japan, with participation in the Embassy's activities to promote Timor-Leste's tourism and culture.

Francisco Kalbuadi Lay, Vice Prime Minister, Coordinating Minister of Economic Affairs and Minister of Tourism and Environment, Milena Maria da Costa Rangel, Vice Minister for ASEAN Affairs, and the Timor-Leste protocol team also attended the meeting.
