Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão discusses bilateral cooperation with South Korea

The Prime Minister, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, held a meeting on September 24th, 2023, in Hangzhou, China, with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea, Han Duck-Soo, to strengthen and expand bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão expressed his delight at having the opportunity, during his visit to China, to take part in the 19th edition of the Asian Games, to meet with good friends and discuss bilateral issues that will bring economic benefits to the people and nation of Timor-Leste.

The Head of Government thanked South Korea for its support over time through KOICA and highlighted the planned building of four large sports complexes.

Xanana Gusmão also expressed his gratitude to the Korean Government and private sector for employing thousands of Timorese workers, offering them opportunities and valuable work experience in South Korea, which has contributed to reducing unemployment in Timor-Leste.

The South Korean Prime Minister reiterated his support for Timor-Leste's full membership of ASEAN and expressed his willingness to continue supporting Timor-Leste in various areas, namely sports, education, health and reforestation, to create a favourable environment for ecotourism in Timor-Leste.

Korea is also committed to continuing to train Timorese workers, providing employment opportunities in South Korea, where they can gain experience that can then be shared in Timor-Leste.
