Brochure launch about the Women Participation on the 2009 Community Elections and Official Presentation of the Electoral Census Results and the 2010 Data Base

The launch ceremony of the brochure on Women Participation in the 2009 Community elections and the official presentation of the Electoral Census Results and the 2010 Data Base update, took place at the Hotel Timor Conference Room, on the 5th of July.

The 2010 Electoral Census results showed that almost 50% of the registered voters are women. It is highlighted that the registration allows them to obtain the voter card, essential to exercise their civic right, the right to vote. The census process also presents a new opportunity for women, who become part of the national data base.

Present at the ceremony, the President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, José Ramos-Horta congratulated the STAE (Technical Secretariat of Electoral Administration) for the initiative to produce the brochure and for the success of the 2010 Electoral Census process. He thanked the United Nations support and appealed to the donor community to continue their support to the UNDP electoral area.

Besides the Head of State, the event was also attended by the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG), Ameerah Haq; the Minister of State Administration and Territorial Planning, Arcângelo Leite, the STAE Director, Tomás Cabral, 6 of the 10 women Suco Chiefs elected in 2009 and the eldest women voter registered in the country, Mrs. Balbina Mendonça Côrte-Real, with 92 years.
