Timor-Leste holds a seminar to evaluate the outcomes of COP27
A seminar entitled Post-COP27, co-organised by the Secretary of State for Environment and OXFAM, was held on the morning of February 7th, 2023, to evaluate the processes and outcomes achieved at the 27th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP-27). The event took place at the Suai Room, Timor-Plaza, in Dili.
The COP27, which took place between November 6th and 18th, 2022, in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, brought together political leaders from the countries that make up the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and representatives from civil society, science, and academia to promote debate on the causes and effects of climate change, intending to define national and global targets and agreements to respond to this challenge.
The national delegation at COP27 included the Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Fidelis Manuel Leite Magalhães, as the extraordinary envoy of the President of the Republic and representative of the Prime Minister, the Secretary of State for Environment, Demétrio do Amaral de Carvalho, the National Director for Climate Change, Augusto Manuel Pinto and the Timor-Leste Ambassador for Climate Change, Adão Soares Barbosa.
Minister Fidelis highlighted the importance of this seminar “to reflect on our role and our institutional capacity so that in the future we can give even more value to the issue of climate change”.
The Governor also explained that Timor-Leste has already made several efforts in this direction, such as, for example, “the formalisation of the establishment of the Designated National Authority for Combating Climate Change”, “Timor-Leste has an ambassador for climate issues and the Secretary of State for Environment has already presented the INDC [Intended Nationally Determined Contribution - for the period 2022-2030], on the commitments and laws related to biodiversity”.
Minister Fidelis also stated that “the Council of Ministers, whilst the highest Government body, has always given maximum support for this issue because it is linked, not only to financial concerns but linked to our survival as a nation and of the world itself.”
