Minister Fidelis returned to Dili today after official visits to Jakarta and Rome

Dili,  September 1st, 2022: The Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Fidelis Manuel Leite Magalhães, returned to Dili today, after official visits to Jakarta and Rome.

In a press conference, the Minister told journalists the main results of the visit to the two countries.

In Rome, Minister Fidelis led the government delegation, which also included the Minister of Tourism, Commerce and Industry, José Lucas do Carmo da Silva, in the ceremony to elevate Dom Virgilio do Carmo da Silva as the first Timorese Cardinal.

Minister Fidelis also had the opportunity to hold a brief meeting with Pope Francis, thanking him and reiterating the invitation to visit Timor-Leste.

In Rome, the government delegation held a meeting with the Timorese community from several European countries to hear their concerns.

Meetings were also held with representatives of partner organizations such as the WFP and FAO to talk about the Government's priority in reducing child malnutrition.

The official also met with the East Timorese Jesuit Father João Inocêncio da Piedade, who teaches philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University, a university of the Catholic Church in Rome, and discussed ways to promote public intellectual and scientific discourse in Timor-Leste.

Before traveling to Rome, the Minister made an official visit to Jakarta.

During this visit, Minister Fidelis met with the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment of the Republic of Indonesia, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, with diplomats accredited to Timor-Leste residing in Jakarta, development partners, entrepreneurs and other relevant personalities.

He also gave lectures and meetings at four universities in the Indonesian capital and was interviewed for CNN Indonesia and Detikcom.

This official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations with Indonesia and making known abroad the main results and progress achieved by Timor-Leste.
