Timor-Leste pays tribute to Max Stahl
On December 15th, 2021, the ashes of Max Stahl arrived in Timor-Leste. The journalist was responsible for filming the images of the Santa Cruz Massacre, in 1991, which drew attention to the situation in the country and put Timor-Leste at the top of the international agenda, thus making an important contribution to the self-determination of the Timorese People.
The ashes of Max Stahl, who died on October 28th, were received at the Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport by Minister Fidelis Magalhães, representing the Prime Minister, several members of Government and the former Presidents of the Republic, Xanana Gusmão and José Ramos-Horta.
This was followed by a parade through the main streets of the city to the Max Stahl Audiovisual Centre in Timor-Leste (CAMSTL), with a stop for a tribute at the 12 November Committee headquarters.
The wake will be held until Thursday at CAMSTL and on Friday the 17th, the funeral ceremonies include a mass at 9am at Motael Church, followed by a march to Santa Cruz Cemetery, where Max Stahl's ashes will be buried.
The ceremonies at the Santa Cruz cemetery also include the awarding of a new decoration, posthumously, to Max Stahl, and the presentation of the national flag to the family.
