Japan consolidates Cooperation in Defense Area

The Government of Timor-Leste, through the Secretary of State of Defence, Júlio Tomás Pinto, received a high level visit from the members of the Parliament and the Vice-Minister of Defence of Japan, Mr. Kazuya Shimba, in the Secretariat of State of Defence, on the 6 of May, for a meeting about cooperation in the Defence area between Timor-Leste and Japan.

The Secretary of State of Defence underlined that “the objective of the Mr. Kazuya Shimba’s visit is to accentuate the aid given by the Japanese Government for the capacity of F-FDTL human resources, cover the perspective of carrying out a seminar in the National Institute for the Studies about Defence, in Tokyo, the ways that Timor-Leste can participate in the ASEAN Regional Forum and also covers the question of Calamity in Management. ”

The Japanese Vice-Minister of Defence, Mr. Kazuya Shimba referred his visit as an opportunity to resume an improved cooperation between the two countries in the area of Defense.

Taking advantage of the opportunity, Júlio Tomás Pinto, expressed to the Japonese Government his appreciation and gratitude for accepting four Timorese into the Japan National Academy of Defence in Yokosuka, where they continue their studies.

According to the program, before his return to Japan, Mr. Kazuya Shimba will meet with Major General Taur Matan Ruak and Finn Reske-Neilsen, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and UNMIT Chief. Mr. Shimba will also make a visit to the Bobonaro district.
