Fire Brigade’s 10th Anniversary

The Fire Brigade is a state institution, created in November of 1999, and designated by Support Commission for Timor-Leste Transition (CSTT). That Commission was also an integrated part of the United Nations Mission, United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET). In November of 1999 Timorese from three districts were recruited, namely Díli, Baucau and Aileu, to become Timorese Fireman.
During the time of the Restoration of Independence of Timor-Leste, in 2002, the Fire Brigade was designated as “Fire Rescue and Emergency Services”, by the Transition Government under Dr. Sérgio Vieira de Mello’s leadership, with the purpose of helping all citizens, specially those that fell victim to the 1999 political conflict.
The creation of the Fire Brigade has the objective to guarantee the performance of services for the safety of the lives of all citizens and their property, namely, to put out fires in houses, forests, industry as well giving assistance in road accidents and to victims of natural disasters.
The Fire Brigade is also responsible for the preparation and development of human resources, through the specialized and continuous capacity building of the Firemen so they can have capacity and knowledge while exercising their functions. In this way, the Fireman, can be suitable to provide services to all citizens in Timor-Leste.
