Timor-Leste and Portugal sign Memorandum of Understanding on Political Consultations
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Adaljiza Magno, and the Portuguese Ambassador in Timor-Leste, José Pedro Machado Vieira, representing the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, signed today, June 10th, 2021, a Memorandum of Understanding on Political Consultations.
This memorandum establishes a mechanism for regular, possibly annually or biannually, high-level political dialogue between the two countries.
Portugal is an important and long-standing partner of Timor-Leste in several sectors.
This agreement will cover the areas of the education, defence, justice, and other sectors of cooperation between the two countries.
Minister Adaljiza Magno also took the opportunity of having this agreement signed on June 10th, when Portugal’s Day is celebrated, to convey her congratulations to all Portuguese citizens in Portugal and in the world, especially to the Portuguese citizens in Timor-Leste, who are celebrating, today, the Camões’ Day.
Usually, every year, we celebrate this day together, but due to COVID-19, this year we are unable to do so. However, with this agreement’s signing ceremony, we greatly value both nations, Timor-Leste and Portugal.
The ceremony was also attended by the Minister of justice, Manuel Cárceres da Costa, the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Julião da Silva, the Vice Minister of State Administration, Lino de Jesus Torrezão, the Secretary of State for Art and Culture, Teófilo Caldas, and other leaders of relevant institutions.
